Forests First
The pathway to Canada’s sustainable energy future is through the forest. Rutter Bioenergy finds, develops, and builds viable bioenergy projects that integrate forests and forest products into our lives, communities, and energy markets. By promoting low-value forest biomass up the value-chain to replace fossil fuels as an energy source, Canada can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve both socioeconomic and environmental outcomes.
As an experienced forester and bioenergy entrepreneur, I bring hands-on knowledge, technical skills, and a broad network of industry professionals to every project. I’m passionate about the future of Canada’s forests and the opportunities to strategically catalyze solutions for renewable, sustainable energy.
About Me
I was born in the urban depths of Southern Ontario and the forest has always been a place of refuge, escape. If you know, you know. Forests have a visceral effect on Canadians and they pulled me into a career of forests, raw wood, chainsaws, machines, wood chips and endless problems to solve.
I started our arboriculture company Rutter Urban Forestry in 2005 with a pickup truck, a chainsaw and a trailer and I grew it into a seven figure company with a staff of 20. Within it, we constantly expand our offerings through research, experimentation and learning it the hard way.
I’m a stereotypical entrepreneur: eager to jump in, learn new skills, try new ideas all with all momentum towards solving problems for customers and building viable businesses. I’m comfortable with risk and not afraid of failure. My customers now get the benefits of 25 years of my successes as well as my lessons learned the hard way.
How do you take wood chip waste from arborists and process it into higher value wood chip heating fuel? With great difficulty! This project at our base in Thunder Bay is huge success story.
